Automation and analytics fail without clean, standardized master data. Yet organizations routinely invest in tools before fixing the data underneath them. This piece lays out a practical sequence for getting ERP data quality right — process standardization first, then automation.

Standardize before you automate

Automating an inconsistent process doesn't make it consistent — it makes the inconsistency faster and harder to unwind. Before any automation or analytics investment, the underlying processes and the data they generate have to be standardized.

That means agreed workflows, consistent data entry, shared master data and clear ownership. It is unglamorous work, and it is the single biggest predictor of whether later digital initiatives will land.

Data quality is multi-dimensional

ERP data quality isn't one thing. It is accuracy (is the value right), completeness (is it filled in), consistency (is it the same across systems), timeliness (is it current) and uniqueness (no duplicates). Each dimension needs its own controls.

Most data quality programs focus on accuracy and ignore the rest, which is why reports still disagree even after a 'cleanup'.

A practical sequence

Start with the masters — vendor and material — because everything else references them. Define standards, assign ownership, put validation at the point of entry, then measure quality over time rather than treating it as a one-time fix.

Only once the masters are stable does it make sense to layer automation and analytics on top. Doing it in reverse is the most expensive way to learn this lesson.

Key takeaways

  • Automating an inconsistent process scales the inconsistency, it doesn't fix it.
  • Data quality has five dimensions — accuracy is only one of them.
  • Fix the masters first; layer automation and analytics on a stable foundation.
